Since
the first log was hollowed out and
and pushed into water, man has struggled
to perfect the design of floating
vessels. For generations, a vessel
that combined high speeds and excellent
stability was the Holy Grail of
ship designers.
Enter the Sea SLICE advanced hullform
demonstrator ship. Designed by Lockheed
Martin Marine Systems, the high
speed Sea SLICE vessel was recently
built and tested and it successfully
proved that a single ship could
exhibit compact size, high speed
with superior seakeeping ability
in rough waters, low wake wash and
mission modularity.
Lockheed Martin continues to invent
and improve state-of-the-art ship
technologies that allow smaller
vessels to travel freely in the
open ocean while retaining the inherent
stability in high sea states of
a much larger ship.
One such advanced marine platform
design that is a specialty of Lockheed
Martin is called the Small Waterplane
Area Twin Hull or SWATH ship. In
November 2001, the R/V KILO MOANA
(AGOR 26) SWATH Oceanographic Research
Ship was launched by Lockheed Martin
and continues a tradition of business
and technology innovation. Lockheed
Martin has been a worldwide leader
in the development of transformational
ships since the design and construction
of the Sea Shadow SWATH stealth
ship in the 1980s, which integrated
fighter jet and ship advanced hullform
technologies.
Lockheed Martin Marine Systems
is also the center of excellence
for Ship Automation. By multiplying
the talents of several Lockheed
Martin businesses and their employees
along with the expertise of niche
commercial companies, we are now
able to provide a world class system,
called the Total Ship Automation
System, for the shipbuilding market.
As an overarching capability, we
provide Ship Integration management
and technical leadership for our
Advanced Marine Platforms. But we
also work with our industrial partners
to perform total Ship Integration
services and Mission Package subsystem
integration.
The combination of business and
technology leadership in Advanced
Marine Platforms, Ship Automation
and Ship Integration make Lockheed
Martin Marine Systems the preferred
solution for emerging military requirements
and commercial marine markets worldwide.
