Lockheed
Martin's SLICE technology
is a patented ship design that enables
Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull
(SWATH) ships to operate at higher
speeds without sacrificing efficiency
by retaining a characteristic low
motion in a seaway. The key to this
innovation is reduction of wave
making drag, which is accomplished
by the introduction of four teardrop-shaped
submerged hulls supported by short
struts. This configuration allows
for speeds well beyond the 'hump'
on the Froude resistance curve.
Combining this increased speed
capability with extraordinary stability
in high seas, SLICE technology
opens up a new set of options to
commercial and military customers.
Ship operators want small, affordable
ships that perform at high speed
in high seas. This technology fulfills
both of these requirements and is
ideal for many applications. This
was proven by the Sea SLICE prototype,
which is only 105 feet long and
52 feet wide, but is as stable in
rough seas as a 350 foot conventional
monohull ship.
Government applications include
patrol/interdiction, search and
rescue, buoy tending, oceanographic
and hydrographic research, missile/satellite
tracking, pilot boat, drug interdiction,
environmental, and cargo transport.
Commercial
applications include offshore support
and transportation, ferry boat,
yachting, excursion vessel, and
recreation craft. Both Government
and Commercial vessel types require
stability for both operation and
passenger/crew comfort, but would
benefit from getting passengers
to their destinations quickly. Again,
payload balancing, modular payload,
unobstructed stern, and additions
to exposed deck space contribute
to the overall appeal of SLICE
technology.
Military coastal applications for
Sea SLICE include command, communications,
and control; missile launching,
mine warfare, and surveillance;
helicopter support; special operations;
national security; offshore patrol;
littoral warfare; anti-Swarm; unmanned
vehicle (AUV/UUV) support; and test/range
support.
A high-speed, fully operational
vessel with quick response, unlimited
operations, and cost efficiency
make SLICE technology an ideal
addition to any ship group.
