Third Aegis-Equipped Spanish Frigate Launched

Moorestown, N.J., June 11, 2003  The Blas de Lezo (F103), the third of four Aegis-equipped ships in the Spanish Navy’s F-100 frigate program, was recently launched in ceremonies at the IZAR shipyard in Ferrol, Spain. In addition, the keel was laid during the ceremonies for the fourth frigate, Méndez Nuñez (F104).

The Spanish Navy selected the Lockheed Martin Aegis Weapon System for its F-100 frigate program in 1997. With this selection, the Spanish embarked on the design and construction of the world’s first Aegis-equipped frigate. Lockheed Martin and Spanish industry partners IZAR, combat systems engineers FABA, and electronics manufacturers INDRA, Sainsel and Rymsa, have seamlessly integrated into the F-100-class a significant number of Spanish-developed sensor, command and control, and weapon systems to produce a revolutionary multi-mission frigate combat system.

The first frigate, Alvaro de Bazán (F101), was commissioned in September 2002 and will complete final sea trials off the coast of Virginia at the end of July. Almirante Juan De Borbon (F102) was launched February 2002 and is scheduled to be commissioned in November 2003 in Spain.

"We joined with multiple Spanish industry partners to design, develop and deliver Aegis technology in a new platform specifically addressing the Spanish Navy’s needs," said Fred Moosally, president of Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems. "The F-100 program is a great example of excellence through partnership."

The Aegis system enables frigates to engage simultaneous threats from over, under and on the sea. Since 1997, Lockheed Martin has provided the Aegis Weapon System for Spain under a Foreign Military Sales Case between the U.S. and Spanish Navies. The agreement covers production, testing, installation and product life cycle support for Aegis Weapon Systems that will be deployed aboard all four F-100 class frigates. The Aegis Weapon System is currently deployed on 65 U.S. Navy cruisers and destroyers on station around the globe, with 24 more ships planned. In addition to the U.S. and Spanish Navies, Aegis is aboard Japanese destroyers and has been selected by Norway and Korea for their latest ships.
