InformationMOORESTOWN, N.J, February 13, 2002 - Lockheed Martin opens its doors next week to nearly 80 local students to share the innovative world of engineering at the company's Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems (NE&SS) business. Students from Florence Memorial Middle, Harrington Middle, Delran Middle and Burlington City Middle Schools will participate in celebrating National Engineers Week, themed, "Without Engineers the World Stops." During their visit, students will experience first-hand engineering tactics and techniques with the Incredible Machine, "seeing" sound waves, and Lego™ Design Workshop. The Incredible Machine is a computer program where students do problem-solving exercises related to engineering. The students can "see" sound waves and learn basic fundamentals of cause and effect and acceleration. "We want young students to experience the excitement, creativity and impact engineering has on everyday life," said Carl Bannar, vice president of Technical Operations at Lockheed Martin. "The experiments the students will conduct are just a sample of what it means to be an engineer. We want to spark an interest in engineering … we want them to be the future of our profession." National Engineers Week 2002 runs from February 17 through 23. Its goal is to raise awareness of the positive contributions engineers make everyday to their communities, this nation and the world. Every major engineering society, many Government agencies, and numerous corporations, businesses and universities join in the celebration. Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin is a global enterprise principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems products and services. In the Delaware Valley, approximately 7,000 Lockheed Martin employees are engaged in space, systems integration and technology services activities for customers worldwide.
